Golden City: Dragons and Eateries

We just came back from beautiful San Francisco where we visited dozens of contemporary art galleries, photographed at least eleven stunning graffitis of dragons, watched the kids indulge in chocolate extravaganza desserts and walked for about 15 miles a day.

Today, I am sharing my favorite street art from the Golden City as well as a quick review of my favorite places for breakfast and lunch.

Breakfast at The Grove Yerba Buena

This is a  family owned business right in the heart of San Francisco. They offer comfort food and generous portions. It’s a great casual restaurant that serves breakfast until 4 pm and hearty dinners.  They use fresh ingredients and have options for everyone in the family ( the vegans, the vegetarians and the omnivores). I especially enjoy their fresh squeezed O.J and Avocado Toast with mixed greens drizzled with basil balsamic vinaigrette. My kids ordered thFrench Toast with caramelized bananas.

Great food, friendly staff, cute decor!

Lunch at Greens Restaurant

Greens Restaurant opened in 1979 as part of San Francisco Zen Center, which includes Green Gulch Farm and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. Located at historic Fort Mason Center in a former machine shop, Greens overlooks the San Francisco Marina with sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands.

This is a must place for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.  Try the Curried Cauliflower Soup, The Spring Thai Red Curry or the Indian Thali. If you happen to run into Annie Somerville, the Executive Chef, ask her to bring back my favorite ( no longer in the menu):  The Mesquite Grilled Brochettes – Mushrooms, Little Farm potatoes, peppers, yams, fennel, red onions and Hodo Soy tofu with chermoula, Hamada Farm fruit and almond quinoa served with Moroccan carrot slaw. Is your mouth watering yet? This is scrumptious! I don’t know how many times I’ve eaten this!

Greens Restaurant is my mandatory stop when I visit the Golden City.

We were in San Francisco for just 24 hours. If you have a couple of days,  make sure to try organic Mexican food at Gracias Madre , vegan pies at Patxi’s Pizza, organic raw empanadas at Pena Pachamama and Pepple Donuts at the  Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. Alternatively, save all your money and go to Millennium Restaurant for the ultimate vegan gourmet experience.  This restaurant recently moved from San Francisco to Oakland but it’s really worth the trip ( roughly 25 min with the BART). To me, it’s the best vegan restaurant in the US and deserves its own separate review.

Hope you enjoy my little trip! 😉 Have you been to San Francisco? What’s your favorite vegan restaurant?
